Artist Statement

I capture the character of my subjects in the same way I molded the characters I played on the operatic stage. I let the child in me come to life. I get to know the subject I am modeling through discussion, observation, perception, and intuition. I sort of bathe in the subject’s aura.

Biography

Primarily known for his portrait sculptures, the work of award-winning artist Maurice Stern has been featured in solo and group exhibitions in galleries and cultural centers in the United States and in Europe, including Allied Artists of America, Audubon Artists, and American Artists Professional League in New York City; the Cornish Gallery in Seattle; and the Moering Gallery in Wiesbaden, Germany.

As an opera singer, Stern performed in international and American premieres at the New York City Opera — before becoming a leading tenor across four continents, where he received constant recognition for his voice, acting and fine character delineation.
